The Resilient One
One main idea that came to the forefront for most of our community, was the Bison as a leader and protector. Our minimalistic dreamcatcher design details across the back of the Bison, taking the form of a shield being carried, symbolizing protection, as well as peace. Connected to the back of the dreamcatcher, and flowing through the back legs, and tail of the Bison, are 7 eagle feathers. Each eagle feather is detailed with one of the 7 Sacred Teachings, again providing connections to leadership and protection. Each feather is connected to the dreamcatcher with a band of ribbon, drawing a connection to ribbon skirts and Indigenous cultures.
Another main idea that came to many conversations was the topic of healing and spiritual well-being. A field of pink wild roses detail both of the front legs, and climb up to the body of the Bison. These wild roses are symbolic to a strong connection with nature, seen as a common theme throughout our Bison. Beyond this connection to nature, the field of wild roses speaks to the topics of healing and spiritual well-being. These were heavy topics discussed between our youth participants and Art Therapy Instructor, when conversing about the mission the Toba Centre works towards. Taking a healing approach that includes not only mental and physical, but as well as a spiritual well-being, were at the top of our youth’s minds when engaging with these deeper subjects.
Spanning the entire body and head of our Bison, is a night sky filled with dancing Northern Lights. This was another image discussed when engaging with the Bison as a topic, linking again leader qualities and a deep connection to nature and the land. The freedom with which the Northern Lights move through our skies connects on a deeper level to the freedom in which we believe our children and youth should feel when moving through life. Dancing through, without fear, and in its stead, leading with hope and strength.

As a Toba Centre supporter since 2020, Payworks stands behind their ongoing mission to restore the health and well-being of those affected by child abuse. From our Winnipeg headquarters to our offices across Canada, it’s our responsibility and honour to support the communities where our employees live, work, and raise their families. With that in mind, we’re proud to continue supporting Toba Centre by participating in their Bison on the Boulevard campaign and helping them to continue providing a coordinated community response to the needs of children and families within this province.”

Cows run away from the storm while the buffalo charges toward it – and gets through it quicker. Whenever I’m confronted with a tough challenge, I do not prolong the torment, I become the buffalo.
