“Growing Up”
This work portrays a Plains Bison bull at two points in his life—young and grown—accompanied by the Poweshiek Skipperling, a tiny butterfly now rarely seen on the prairies. Together, they stand as symbols of resilience and renewal. Elements such as prairie crocus, a quilt star, and wheatgrass are woven in, each carrying its own cultural and ecological meaning. Near the legs of the structure, a plains landscape emerges, grounding the figures in the territory that has long sustained both species and story
The recent return of the Plains Bison and the fragile resurgence of the Poweshiek Skipperling in Manitoba mark powerful moments of ecological recovery. Through this piece, I reflect on the connection between land, life, and the communities who remain rooted to both. It is a recognition of survival, interdependence, and the ongoing relationship between cultural and environmental restoration

Cows run away from the storm while the buffalo charges toward it – and gets through it quicker. Whenever I’m confronted with a tough challenge, I do not prolong the torment, I become the buffalo.
